What is the best method to acquire a job after being laid off for awhile?

Answer:

Searching for a job is a full time job.

Start by making a list of things that you are qualified to do because of certification, previous experience, education, etc. or jobs that you are interested in doing.

Look into local companies that offer jobs that fit these positions. I don't know the details, so I can't tell you where an ideal place to look is but universities and community colleges really offer a lot of positions in a lot of areas. You can use craigslist, monster, and hot jobs but you REALLY have to be careful about the scams (75-80% of every posting there is a scam). If you decide to go this route, make sure there is a company name listed and that its a legitimate company, one that you can look up then drive by. Do not email anyone your resume, if you cannot bring it to them in person then its probably not a good place to apply to (this is in GENERAL. Some businesses don't want people coming in but for people just getting started its better to be overly cautious)

Read the descriptions of jobs you're interested in.

Write your resume to emphasize the qualities, education, experience you have that fits the description. DO NOT LIE. You should submit a specific resume and cover letter to each job, not a standard one. There's a ton of resume help online and you can look at examples from specific fields. Include a resume/cover letter to everything you apply for, even if it isn't required.

At an interview, be prepared to answer questions about your employment gaps. Frame being laid off as a positive thing. There are sites online that can help you with how to do this and what you can say.

Being laid off doesn't change the job process at all. You just may be asked about why you're not employed or why you got laid off but its really common these days and most places aren't even asking anymore.
